We remember! After 75 years, the horrors of the Holocaust haven’t been forgotten
The horrors of one of the cruelest events in the history of mankind have not been forgotten this year eather, so the day of 27th of January was dedicated to commemorating the 75 years from the Holocaust.
Nevo Parudimos wanted to mark this day through an international conference named ”75 years of Remembrance” that took place between 26-29 January in partnership with The West University of Timisoara, The Jewish Community of Timisoara, RROMA Organization from Macedonia and other internationat partners.
The event focused on the genocide of Roma people. More than 500.000 Roma persons were exterminated during the WW II by the Nazis and their allies. They either died of hunger, of illness, or due to the brutal treatment applied by Nazi guards. Others were the victims of the ”final solution” in the gas chambers.
The event embraced a number of meetings and workshops that took place at The West University of Timisoara and had as participants, beside university teachers and experts in the field from Romania, and other countries, students from different schools in Timisoara. The teens had the opportunity to take part at a series of emotional presentations regarding the way that roma people were treated at that poin in history. The presentations were held by different teachers from Romania, Macedonia, Serbia, Germany, Bulgaria and Hungary.
Also, in 27th of January another commemoration gathering took place at Sinagoga Iosefin from Timisoara, partnered with The Jewish Community of Timisoara.
The main purpose of the event was to raise a strong awareness on the Romani genocide concentrating on the events taken place in the Balkans, Hungary and Transnistria before, during, after WWII, in order to preserve the memory of the Roma and Sinti victims of Nazism.
The activities from Timisoara are a part of the project “European Remembrance and Solidarity – Our Right to Remember!”, initiated by RROMA Organization from Macedonia in partnership with other 14 NGO’s from all around Europe.
