Early school leaving (ESL) is a worrying phenomenon throughout Europe, but especially in Hungary and Romania. A joint empirical research carried out by the Co-Efficient Association and Nevo Parudimos in the period 2015-2017 (LEADNFL) confirmed that this phenomenon has a particularly negative effect on marginalized Roma youth living in poverty, often facing double discrimination and facing – deal directly with the negative consequences of leaving school early.
Youth activity, especially among marginalized youth, faced difficulties especially during the isolation periods of 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic: marginalized youth could not keep up with the move of education and services to the online environment from several reasons, further increasing the negative effects already experienced. The problem was not only poor access to digital tools, but also a mismatch between institutional expectations and concrete support provided.
The “Avas Khetane – Get Together” project aims to develop a long-term structural methodology, using art and experiential learning as a tool, adapted with individual development plans to cover the needs of young people with fewer opportunities, needs endangered by school dropout. The project combines the expertise of youth workers and teachers as it is cross-sectoral, involving primary schools and basic human service providers involved in local youth activities.
Project objectives:
- to reduce the school dropout of young people living in extreme poverty, who are excluded from digital education and are most affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. We bring together the public education and youth sectors, using art and creativity.
- to develop and test a methodology that can be used by pedagogy and youth work.
- initiation of an intersectoral dialogue and effective dissemination of the results.
Activities:
The project is carried out in three EU countries, with a total of 5 partners and 3 associated partners:
- Gathering existing good practices using arts and non-formal learning tools.
- Development of the methodology of a structured one-year program that develops social and intercultural competences and strengthens the motivation to learn, which includes group sessions organized weekly outside school, but covered by mentoring from public education, and aims to motivate young people from 13- 14 years to continue his studies.
- The methodology developed by the intersectoral team will be tested in Romania and Hungary by involving 15 young people/country. For each young person we will prepare a special development plan. Parents will also be involved in the process.
- Documenting the results through the measurement and evaluation system developed during the development of the methodology. Instead of test-based summative assessment, we focus on formative assessment, which is subjective but aims to improve activities through feedback. In addition to formative assessment, we incorporate methods of self-directed learning.
- The summary of experiences accumulated during one year during each pilot period, the methodology created during the project and its results will be published in a manual.
- We will disseminate the publication in the participating countries and at European level through three dissemination events.
