Nevo Parudimos Association is implementing between April and July 2022 an extensive project aimed at creating an “infrastructure” to help Roma migrants from Ukraine, and Roma who decide to stay in Ukraine during the war.
Through this project we want to develop a Humanitarian Hub targeting Roma in Ukraine by centralizing and coordinating the efforts already made by Roma civil society across Europe in providing humanitarian support to Roma communities in Ukraine during the war with Russia.
Our initiative comes in response to the need for a concrete and coordinated effort to help the ethnic Ukrainian Roma, which at the moment is completely lacking.
Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, more than 5 million people have left the country, but the number of Roma is minuscule, in most cases the Roma are the last people to leave their homes to escape the war. This is due to lack of resources, lack of information and lack of identification documents.
In the context of the war, Roma in Ukraine face great difficulties due to lack of information, lack of funds, discrimination or many other factors. These people need support in Ukraine and also in the countries to which they have migrated but where they live without resources, without security of tomorrow and often face discrimination.
With this project, we want to initiate a process that will have 3 components:
– Coordination of humanitarian aid through Romania/Moldova to Ukraine to provide food, medicine and other products that Roma people need for their daily life
– Coordination of support actions and communication with interested parties to help support Roma people to leave Ukraine and come to Romania, Moldova or other EU states
– Monitoring and keeping under control the phenomenon of discrimination and violation of human rights faced by Roma in Ukraine and Roma migrants.
More specifically, we want to create an infrastructure and a coordination system that will facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid to Roma communities in need in Ukraine, as well as to Ukrainian Roma refugees in Romania and Moldova, as follows:
Humanitarian Aid Hub/Infrastructure:
– Establishing a complete infrastructure to deliver humanitarian aid through 3 border crossing points:
South-East Romania/Central-South Ukraine: Galati/Tulcea and Odesa regions (crossing around Tulcea)
Northern Romania / South-West Ukraine: Siret/Suceava and Chernivtsi regions
Eastern Romania: Iasi/Sculeni and Sculeni regions of Moldova/Ungheni
Establishment of a receiving warehouse in Romania and one in Moldova for humanitarian aid shipments from different parts of Europe, plus cross-border transportation to locations in Ukraine
Establishing 2 hubs for the delivery of humanitarian aid in Odesa region and Chernivtsi region
Creating a coordination system:
– Telephone line in Ukraine for collecting and coordinating requests for support from vulnerable and excluded Roma communities; coordination of delivery and distribution transport in Ukraine
– Telephone line for monitoring human rights violations
– Hotline in Romania to provide support to Ukrainian refugees to find shelter in Romania or to travel abroad and to coordinate with local and international partners to help refugees
– Hotline in Moldova to provide support to Ukrainian refugees to find shelter in Moldova, Romania or to travel abroad
This coordination system can also support the safe evacuation of Roma from Ukraine to other countries and the monitoring of human rights violations.
