Nevo Parudimos Association implemented between July 22-31 the youth exchange within the project “Roma youth are active citizens” which brought together in Milcoveni, Caras-Severin, 30 young people of Roma ethnicity and from disadvantaged neighborhoods in Romania, Macedonia , Greece, Germany and Serbia.
The project focused on developing civic spirit among Roma youth and raising their awareness of the importance of voting and decision-making in their communities. One of the main objectives of this project was to create a learning dimension about state institutions and how they are interconnected for the young participants. The youth exchange also focused on encouraging dialogue between participants and local public authorities and state institutions, so that young people can better understand their role and how decisions are made at the local level.
The idea for this project came from the need of Roma youth from the communities with which the Nevo Parudimos Association and the project partners work to be more aware of their decision-making power in the community. Working daily with young people from Roma communities in Reșița and other localities in Caras-Severin, Nevo Parudimos found that Roma youth have no political education to understand how the political system works, the election process, the need for civic involvement and the importance of voting.
We believe that these young people need to be educated so that they can better understand the political system and how it can be improved. Young people in general and those in disadvantaged communities in particular need to learn why their vote is important at local, national and European level.
That is why the aim of the project was to increase the participation of Roma youth in the local, national and European decision-making process.
The project “Roma youth are active citizens” is funded by the Erasmus + program.
