ROUND TABLE “ROMA YESTERDAY, TODAY, TOMORROW”

During the Roma World Congress, which took place in London, in 1971, a decision was made concerning the date of 8 April, which became the International Day of Roma people all over the world.

During the same Congress, the song ”Gelem, gelem” was adopted as international hymn of the Roma people, which was sang by the singer and actress Olivera Vuco,  in the known Yugoslav film „I Even Met Happy Gypsies”, a firm made in  1967.

The international Roma flag was also adopted, being half green, as a symbol of green fields and the up half being blue, representing the blue sky, and in the middle a wheel, which symbolizes, on one side, faith, the wheel of life succession, and on the other side, the nomad characteristic in relation to the India origin space.

In order to mark the importance of this day, the Nevo Parudimos Association, in partnership with the Roma Civic Alliance from Romania, the Danube Roma League and the Christian Humanist Association of the Caras-Severin district Roma, organized the round table “ROMA, yesterday, today, tomorrow”, and event which took place on the date of 04.04.starting with 10:00 hours in the meeting room of the Caras-Severin district Council.

Representatives of different institutions were invited to participate together with Roma activists from the Caras-Severin district (mayors and Roma politicians, Roma experts hired by town and city halls, Roma didactic personnel, school and medical mediators, representatives of non-governmental associations, priests, Roma students, social workers, community leaders from the Caras-Severin district).

Special invited personalities included:

  • Marian Daragiu – President of the Roma Civic Democratic Alliance from Romania;
  • David Mark – Executive director of the Roma Civic Alliance from Romania,
  • Florin Georgescu – President of the Florists’ Association in Romania;
  • Letiţia Mark – President of the Roma Women Association for Our Children;

Thus was the first event of this kind organized in the Caras-Severin district by Roma people for Roma people, where problems and realities were discussed and which will be the problems and realities of Roma life in the future.
