Active Citizens Together
During the period 11-17 April2018, 35 young people from Romania, Cyprus, Lithuania, Hungary and Turkey, participated in the youth exchange program “Active Citizens Together”, in Bank, Hungary. Nevo Parudimos participated as partner, the coordinator of this program being the CoEfficient organisation and Theatre Creators from Hungary.
The Romanian group had the following experience:
“The purpose of this project was for all participants to share ideas and emotions by participating in activities developed during this period. During the first day all participants took part in the activity “Name Games”, which helped us to know each other and create a friendly environment. During the second day, participants were divided into multicultural teams, where each team had to present a small theatre play referring to the present problems of our society. The theatre scenes presented themes as: discrimination, domestic violence, nepotism, LGBT-Q, social exclusion. With the help of these plays, strong messages were sent that needed to be heard and to help make changes.
During the time period spent in Bank, a series of discussions and debates was also included, one of them referring to “Human Rights”. Human rights represent an important theme all over history, and even in the 21st century, because even now these rights are something that can’t be reached by some people. First of all, in order to learn more about human rights a game was established as main activity. This game contained sheets of paper containing historical events and that needed to be arranged in chronological order. After discussing different situations and different laws from different countries, each participant had to choose a position, agreeing or not. It was interesting to observe different opinions and arguments.
A night that we couldn’t forget was the inter-cultural one. During that evening, we found more about the culture of different participant state in this project. We danced traditional dances, Turkish, Lithuanian, and Romania. We had the opportunity to eat traditional food from each country.
The next day we visited Budapest. The culture and architecture of this city drew our attention and we enjoyed the time spent to know this magnificent city. The important activity prepared for this city was “Treasure Hunt”. The purpose of this activity was to visit different places from Budapest and become active citizens. We had to ask citizens what does “active citizen” mean to them and what do they know about human rights. The answers received were interesting and used to create a video and a newspaper at the end of the project.
The spare time spent together during this project was also a constructive one, because we became friends with the other participants. During the time spent in Bank we established a tradition, to light a fire each evening and sit and talk around it. Music played in the background, building a movie experience. None of the histories and experiences lived in this project won’t be forgot. The same situation repeats itself with the idea exchange between different people from different countries, which is a unique experience, and we will always be grateful for offering us the chance to live such an experience through this project.
As a result of this project we could understand how important it is to become active citizens in the society we live in. We are the young generation and we can change everything through work and staying united. We are equal and will fight to keep it this way!” (Dima, Roxana, Iasmin, Petruta, Lavinia, Alexandru).
